It’s Not The Network, It’s The Devices (oh, and the network is important, too.)

Can You Hear Me Now?
Here’s an interesting article in the Wall Street Journal about Verizon’s network capacity and consideration of how ready Big Red is for the iDevice that may or may not be coming its way in 2011.
These days, retail data suggests consumers are basing their decisions about which phone to buy more on the device itself rather than the network. That’s partly due to the iPhone effect… everyone wanting to be as cool as their friends with iPhones. But the network is still important to anyone who cares about actually using their phone for voice calls.
A great quote from the WSJ article:
Mary Gazella, a 30-year-old life-insurance underwriter based in Manhattan, said network quality is her biggest issue. “I have been pretty impatient for the [Verizon Wireless] iPhone,” she said. “The ability to know my calls aren’t going to drop is more important to me.”
Indeed. The summary: will Verizon’s network be ready for a data iPlosion in 2011? Of course.

There’s An App For That And This And That
Posted on 11. Oct, 2010 by Jay Witherspoon in Wireless Industry
As the marketplace for smartphone applications develops, we’ll see companies tussle for marketshare. But these days companies are not only fighting for marketshare, but trying to create it, too.
Best Buy is the latest company to admit considering entering the Android smartphone “application marketplace” fray. Last week it was Amazon.com.
Who knows what apps or app marketplaces will wind up taking off? It’s all being decided as we consumers choose how we use our wireless devices every day.

Verizon Announces 4G For 38 Cities, But What Is 4G?
Posted on 08. Oct, 2010 by Jay Witherspoon in 4G LTE, Wireless Industry
Verizon announced this week the 38 markets that would receive high-speed LTE coverage before the end of this year. The speeds are insane. 5-12 Mbps down, and 2-5 Mbps up. That will make your DSN line (and maybe even your cable modem) feel like dial-up.
No matter what chatter you hear from the marketing gurus of the various wireless providers, the fact is that Verizon is about to BLAZE ahead of the other carriers in terms of ultra-high speed network development. And LTE is being adopted around the globe, which will bring down cost and improve device portability. Verizon invested in the best (700MHz) spectrum, edging out Google in a federal auction, with a nearly $10 billion dollar investment in the best spectrum range. This will allow Verizon to build fewer, farther reaching towers than anyone else, and will have the continental US covered by 2013.
I hope everyone is sitting down and buckled in tight, because the future is coming fast.
For those who want to dig a little deeper into the 4G claims of the carriers, here’s a lengthy but informative take from cNet’s Maggie:
