Yet Another Media Cycle For Apple, Big Red

Posted on 30. Aug, 2010 by Jay Witherspoon in Wireless Industry

Perhaps in a bid to see how many words can possibly be published about the iPhone’s supposed upcoming relationship with the Verizon network, a new round of speculation has the iPhone launching soon on Sprint/Nextel and not on the Verizon network:

Verizon iPhone may not be a reality after all

No keen insights from yours truly.  Other than… Droid does.  And it does so NOW.

Keeping Your Smartphone Secure

Posted on 20. Aug, 2010 by Jay Witherspoon in Wireless Industry

As the smartphones in our pockets, purses, and on our hips become more powerful and contain ever-more valuable information, the security of these hand-held computers becomes more and more important.

The fact is that right now there aren’t very many viruses or attacks on smartphones compared to the number targeting desktop computers, but those numbers are shifting as more and more people carry smartphones.

The best way to keep yourself protected is simply to be aware of what activities might be ill-advised.  No matter how secure the smartphone, there are ways owners can decrease that security without meaning to.

Most of the basic smartphone security rules are common sense, but worth repeating:

  • Don’t download apps from unknown sources.
  • Don’t leave your phone lying around.
  • Run a security app.  Most devices have well-known (and often free) security apps available.  Lookout is what I use on my HTC Incredible.
  • Put a password on your phone.

So go get yourself a smartphone today!  And be smart about how you use it.

Chrome OS Tablet Coming To Verizon This Year?

Posted on 18. Aug, 2010 by Jay Witherspoon in Equipment, Wireless Industry

The Rainbow Eye Sees You.Some people can’t get enough leaked info about upcoming devices.  I, for one, would rather wait until formal announcements are made before I get too worked up about a new device.

This one is no exception, but I’m catering to those of you who are interested in what comes out of so-called “reliable” sources online.  This time it’s another rumor about a Google tablet coming to Verizon, this one running the Chrome OS.

This is by no means a formal announcement of any sort.  Just another rumor that should be taken with a grain or fistful of salt.

If you can’t wait for a tablet, I’d suggest getting an iPad and a MiFi device from VZW so you can always get online.

Cellular Sales Expanding in South Florida

Posted on 16. Aug, 2010 by Jay Witherspoon in Company News

Great stores, great people, great product.Last week, the Broward County School system announced it re-hired 400 school teachers, and our little announcement about adding 100 sales positions in communities around Miami sounded wimpy in comparison.  Thus it received minimal coverage in the area.

So we’re banging the gong again this week, in English and in Spanish.  If you’re in the South Florida area, and you’ve got sales skills, motivation and a servant’s heart, then you’re perfect for Cellular Sales.  Visit CellularSales.com/opportunity for more info.

New Vonage App For Facebook Users

Posted on 11. Aug, 2010 by Jay Witherspoon in Wireless Industry

VonageSkype has a new competitor in the world of mobile voice apps.

Vonage recently announced that Facebook users with the Vonage mobile app will be able to call other Facebook users for free.  The Vonage app works over WiFi as well as 3G/4G networks.

It’s a new twist on mobile voice apps.  Skype Mobile only works on Verizon Android handsets.  Vonage’s offering also works with Android devices on T-Mobile, Sprint, and Nextel (oh yeah, there’s an app for the iPhone, as well).  Only Vonage has the Facebook tie in, which might turn out to be a better way to saturate the marketplace.  This is an interesting race to watch for the mobile industry.

Coming in 2011: HTC Android World Phone?

Posted on 09. Aug, 2010 by Jay Witherspoon in Uncategorized

FeistyLittleDroid.comEveryone should take all wireless hardware leaks with a grain of salt.  But this recently leaked information will likely make some business travelers happy.  This phone means folks will be able to take their Verizon/Android phone with them overseas and still be able to talk on wireless voice networks (assuming this handset comes to fruition).

Check out this new HTC device and see what you think about it.  The launch date is a ways off, so specs are likely to change.

Smartphones Could Soon Replace Your Wallet.

Posted on 06. Aug, 2010 by Jay Witherspoon in Wireless Industry

Ch-Ching.When I was a kid, I thought when you needed money, that you wrote a check.  There was a time in my young life when I couldn’t grasp the concept of a bank holding someone’s money until they wrote a check.  To me, the “magic check” was all you needed to get money.  That seemed like a good set-up to a 5-year-old.

That was before the dramatic rise in the use of credit cards, which further complicates things for young people trying to understand value and currency.

Now, for better or for worse (there are reasons to think it’s better), smartphones may begin to replace credit cards as a method of payment for many businesses (BusinessWeek).  Using a smartphone may be better, because, unlike a credit card, a smartphone could tell you what your balance is before and after the transaction.  And I am sure there will also be integrated apps to help you categorize and analyze your spending habits, perhaps even control them… I’m picturing an app you could set to “lock yourself out” from spending at a certain location, like the neighborhood bar.  The app could have varying degrees of complexity to unlock paying at that location.  So, you might not go down to the bar if you know you have to solve a crossword puzzle first!

One large hurdle must first be overcome: merchants don’t want to pay for new mobile payment equipment until there are enough consumers using the technology, but consumers don’t want to absorb additional cost in a phone if not enough merchants have systems to accept mobile payment!  If this Catch-22 can be overcome, I for one, like the idea of paying with my phone even better than paying with my magic debit card.

Cellular Sales’ Knoxville Jobs Announcement Sparks Massive Interest.

Call Center Expansion! It's Alive!!

Call Center Growth
Cellular Sales had an amazing response to our announcement that we’d be adding jobs to the Knoxville, TN area.  In the days immediately following the announcement, we received over 1,000 applications.  The positions are being filled as the call center ramps up.  It’s obvious that a lot of people are looking for work, and we’re glad to be able to provide some positions and help out families who need the opportunity.

One of the newest programs in our national call center is a customer satisfaction follow-up program where we call every customer within 48 hours of buying a new phone.  This call is made to make sure everything is going all right with the customer’s new phone and to score their experience with the wireless expert who sold them their phone.  It’s  being received very well so far, driving down returns and reinforcing the right behaviors at the point of sale.  No matter how good you are at these things, you can always get better.

How Sweet The Sound | A Verizon Experience
In un-related news, Verizon recently wrapped up the voting in its search for the best church choir in America.  Now the winners will go on tour and you should check them out if you have the chance.  Here’s the schedule.
