Smartphone In’s And Out’s
Posted on 28. May, 2010 by Jay Witherspoon in Wireless Industry
Here’s a good article explaining the difference between the iPhone OS and Android, and the in’s and out’s of the battle for smartphone supremacy. Marketshare for advanced devices is nearing 40% of wireless users in the US. In related news, my mom got my dad an iPad this past weekend, which is either a sign of the end of days, or a sign that ANYone can embrace technology. I’ll optimistically assume it’s the latter. And that your grandmother will soon be updating her FB status: OMG, I luv these precious LOLcats!!
Excerpt from “What Makes Android Tick” on TechNewsWorld.com:
Oddly, Android’s primary strength might be Apple’s exclusive agreement with AT&T. This deal forced Verizon, which is in its own fierce battle for market share, to search for an alternative to the iPhone. The first offspring of the Verizon-Android alliance, the Motorola Droid, showcased the ever-improving capabilities of the Android platform and solidified its place as a player in the smartphone ecosystem.

Posted on 26. May, 2010 by Jay Witherspoon in Cellular Sales News, Events, Wireless Industry
Check out the video we put together, with the help of our friends at Cobblestone Entertainment, for The Main Event that happened in Knoxville, TN back on May 12. Mobile showrooms were delivered and sweat flowed as events teams from across the country set up their exhibits, tested all the parts, and shared tips and tricks for how to put on a successful mobile wireless sales event.
Mobile Advertising. Now’s The Time?
Posted on 24. May, 2010 by Jay Witherspoon in Wireless Industry
Here’s an interesting blog post from back in January of this year about advertising on mobile handsets. The piece is from communications company, Hill Holiday. An interesting statement from the post is: “For years, the argument has been used that online ad spend should bear some close relationship to the amount of time consumers spend with the channel.”
I would argue that ad spend should bear an even closer relationship to return on investment, but I get the point, and it’s one marketers are trying to wrap their minds around… I’ve seen numbers that predict smartphones will make up nearly 40% of the wireless market by the end of 2010. That’s a whole lot of eyeballs spending a whole lot more time on those little handheld screens. That’s a whole lot of sales opportunities.
But how will mobile advertising REALLY work? Will it continue to take the form of the tiny ads Google places above or below the “free” mobile apps I use on my phone? Will it take the form of advertising to users of certain mobile networks like Foursquare or Facebook? Or will mobile advertisers geo-target customers using GPS coordinates provided through their network? Likely, it will take the form of all of the above, but now for mobile advertising is like 1992 was for the Internet. There are a lot of retailers bumping into walls trying to find where they’re going and what works while the number of mobile users just keeps growing.
If you know of a homerun mobile advertising campaign, please share it with us in the comments section!

CellularSales.com: Ask An Expert. Get An Answer.
Posted on 19. May, 2010 by Jay Witherspoon in Cellular Sales News, Service Features
CellularSales.com has recently had a much-needed face lift! One of the new features we’re excited about is the “Ask An Expert” section where users can submit questions to our sales force. In most cases, answers will come within a couple of hours (and in many cases, way quicker). We’ve got a lot of wireless experts who are more than happy to help, just because they like to help. We’re hoping this helpfulness will be a breath of fresh air for folks looking for answers online, and we encourage anyone and everyone to take advantage of this resource. Answers are archived for future use, and users are alerted as soon as an answer arrives.
So, go, ponder until you are flummoxed. Then ask a wireless expert to illuminate. There are no dumb questions, just orphaned threads. Kidding. We even answer the dumb ones (with a smile)!

Track The Gulf Oil Spill With Your HTC Droid Incredible
Posted on 17. May, 2010 by Jay Witherspoon in Service Features, Wireless Equipment
I know I’ve been posting a lot about Google and Android handsets lately. Today is no exception. Here’s a way for folks interested in tracking the developing disaster in the Gulf of Mexico on their HTC Droid Incredible using Twitter and an Android app called “Peep”:
Track the oil spill with your Verizon Wireless, HTC Droid Incredible.
By the way, we do still sell LOTS of other phones, including BlackBerry’s and non-smartphones. But it’s hard not to talk about one of the best handsets that the industry has ever seen.

cnet Prizefight: HTC Droid Incredible Beats That Other Phone
Posted on 13. May, 2010 by Jay Witherspoon in Cellular Sales News
According to cnet, the HTC Droid Incredible is better than the iPhone. Just sayin’.
Yesterday Cellular Sales hosted a huge mobile showroom “delivery event” where the events teams from across the country came to Knoxville to pick up brand new mobile showrooms and mobile exhibits. Between belly laughs and profuse sweating, these events guys managed to infect me with their enthusiasm and an overwhelming desire to guzzle energy drinks. We got the best carnies in the wireless industry, period. Here are a few shots of the big event, below.

Android Surpasses iPhone in Smartphone Marketshare in Q1 2010
Posted on 10. May, 2010 by Jay Witherspoon in Cellular Sales News, Wireless Industry
iLove Apple products as much as the next guy, but if they’re on a bad network, they’re not at all reaching their potential. I currently carry the new HTC Droid Incredible (on the nation’s best wireless network), and I am here to tell you the iPhone 4G (assuming it makes it to Verizon in 2011) will have to be one bad shut-your-mouth to make me want to leave the Android platform. Apparently consumers agree with the points above, because Android handsets just overtook the iPhone’s #2 position behind RIM/BlackBerry in smartphone sales during Q1 2010.
Also, here’s an interesting article stating that Verizon users have iPhone envy. Likely to very likely, I admit. But I imagine just as many iPhone users have Verizon network envy!

Mobile Showroom Now Servicing Nashville Customers
Posted on 07. May, 2010 by Jay Witherspoon in Cellular Sales News, Customer Service
It’s been a tough week for our Nashville market. But Cellular Sales’ Regional Directors Rob Stinnett and David Maples have set up one of our mobile showrooms at 15567 Old Hickory Blvd to help take care of our customers (who are heavily relying on their cellphones and car chargers through this emergency) as well as to help out our sales reps who were displaced from Cellular Sales’ Opry Mills Mall location. The mall is devastated and our store was a complete loss. Our hearts go out to everyone who has suffered through the flood.
I guess now would be a good time to look back at a customer note Rob and David received April 30, before the deluge, about one of our Nashville-area reps, Rolin Rayne…
I have been a Verizon Wireless customer for many years. I live in Dickson County, Tennessee and am in Nashville on a weekly basis. One day I found myself in the Verizon store on White Bridge Rd, in Nashville needing to upgrade my phone and was interested in the Broadband service offered by Verizon. Rolin was the one who offered to assist me. I would like for you to be aware what a wonderful help he was to me. I called him over the weekend with a question about the broadband, which he was very informative and eager to assist. My husband went into the Dickson store to upgrade his phone after I did and I said, “no, Rolin will help us.” Sure enough, the next time I was in Nashville, Rolin set us up again. He sent us a text message each time to remind us to mail in our rebates, then texted us a few weeks later to verify that we received them. His kind personality is very inviting for help and makes it easy to ask questions. I choose to use the White Bridge Road store verses my hometown store because of Rolin Rayne’s kindness. I have referred some of my neighboors and friends that way knowing they will be treated right. It isn’t often nowadays to have great, friendly customer service, I found that with Rolin and just want him to be recognized for his outstanding service. Even though I am a bit older than Rolin, I told him I feel like he is my big brother, making sure he is taking care of his little sister! Seeing your names on the bottom of the invoice, I thought you may like to know that someone is pleased with one of your agents!
Thanks,
KC – Dickson, TN
